Elucidating the Barriers and Facilitators to Breast Cancer Screening: Gaining Perspective of Women with Disabilities - 5/1/06-4/30/09
Objective/aim is to better understand how living with disability impacts how easy or difficult it is for rural women to receive regular breast cancer screenings (including mammography, clinical breast exam, and breast self exam) as nationally recommended. For more info: http://withuss.phhp.ufl.edu/

Muscle Preservation and Swallow Function Following Radiotherapy - 7/1/06-6/30/2010
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the dose response of two levels of swallowing exercise intensity on the maintenance of muscle composition and function for swallowing in Head/Neck Cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. For more info: http://srl.phhp.ufl.edu/

For Better For Worse: Late Effects of Cancer and BMT - 9/25/06-8/31/08
We will enroll 60 BMT spouse-caregivers from 40 transplant centers in North America who participated in one of our previous studies. The study consists of two parts: (1) semi-structured telephone interviews used to identify salient loss and recovery themes, followed by (2) telephone focus groups to confirm and validate the loss and recovery themes and to evaluate a quantitative measure of cancer caregiver QOL or posttraumatic growth. Data will be used to develop prevention/treatment programs for spouse-caregivers, and new measures, if indicated.

Electrical Stimulation Therapy for Dysphagia: Physiological Analysis - 7/1/07-7/1/09
The purpose of this research study is to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of a specific program of Transcutaneous neuromuscular electrical stimulation (VitalStim)and therapy compared to more traditional swallowing therapy in patients who have had severe swallowing problems for at least 3 months. VitalStim is a commercially available device approved by the FDA for this application. However, only limited outcome data are available on this clinical approach and virtually no physiological data from patient groups. For more info: http://srl.phhp.ufl.edu/

Florida Disability and Health Program - 7/2/07-6/30/12
Goal is to assist the CDC in disseminating and evaluating materials from their Right to Know campaign – which were developed to increase awareness and perceived susceptibility of breast cancer among women with physical disabilities and increase self-efficacy by encouraging these women to get screened. In collaboration with several community-based organizations, and using various dissemination strategies, Dr. Lopez and her team will introduce the campaign initially in: 16 North Central Florida counties, and eventually throughout Florida state.

From Individuals to Communities and Back - 10/18/07-10/17/08
The aim of this study is to conduct a needs assessment of patients undergoing chemo-radiation for head/ neck cancer and identify the requirements for continued rehabilitation services that will maximize their function and outcomes during and after medical management of their cancer. Allied health clinical service provision at the Shands Cancer Center will be evaluated for timing, access and, patterns of use. Community stakeholders, cancer survivors and their caregivers will be surveyed to identify their access to services and perceived needs. This information will be used to develop a model of optimal service delivery for cancer patients/survivors.

A Randomized Trial of NMES VS. Traditional Dysphagia Therapy After Stroke - 4/25/08-3/31/10
This study aims to investigate the effect of NMES therapy for dysphagia upon recovery of swallowing function following stroke. This pilot study will follow a double blind randomized controlled trial design. Fifty one patients admitted to a sub-acute rehabilitation facility will be clinically screened for dysphagia, and randomized into one of three groups, NMES, sham NMES or treatment as usual(TAU) -behavioral swallowing therapy arm. The results of this trial will add to the preliminary data on the effectiveness of this form of swallowing treatment for patients following stroke, and has the potential to enable more efficient allocation of resources to post-acute rehabilitation and thus benefit afforded to stroke patients, and the community.

Dysphagia Intervention with Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation for Swallowing - 07/01/08 – 06/01/11
A comparison of NMES to traditional dysphagia therapy for swallowing difficulty after stroke- The DINES Trial: The proposed study is a large single blind international, multisite study of the efficacy of a specific program of NMES in the treatment of dysphagia post stroke. The Swallowing Research Laboratory at the University of Florida is the coordinating center for this trial .This study will be conducted over 2 years at six institutions in the USA and Australia.
